Hey everyone, I hope you had a great weekend! Mine was fantastic considering I had the thought of ALL the readings I have to do on my mind. Welcome to university, Sylvia. Anyways, reading for all my classes is a later problem, let’s see what I did this weekend!
Saturday
My day started at the Parkinson’s SuperWalk. I was really excited to go to this because recently a close family member was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, so this disease has become apart of my family. I got there and was instantly greeted by Rowdy Cat, which made the start really well! I had a great conversation about the organization and Parkinson’s with the organizer, Ron, who went to high school with my uncle (#PolarPride).
Prince George raised over $10,000 for the Parkinson’s Society of BC and over $1500 was donated by TELUS to the PG Support Group! This money is going to go a far way because scientists aren’t 100% sure how Parkinson’s starts and they don’t know how to cure it.
After, I had to make a quick pit stop at the PGTFC wrap-up BBQ and then I headed over to the mall to check out the Active Living Market. Before I walked in, I was welcomed by some firefighters who were fundraising for Muscular Dystrophy Canada. They were telling me about all the fundraising events they have throughout the year. This one was to fill up big gumboots with money for MDC!
While I was at the Rec Mart, I ended up talking to A LOT of people. (If you know me, you know that this is not hard for me to do, haha). I learned about all the cool and exciting events that will be happening this year, and let me tell you: there are a lot! Make sure to always check the Community Events Calendar for them ;)!
After the mall, I headed up to PGARA for the Championship Finale. I ended up in the pit again (always fun) and the FunChaser Jeep was assigned a VERY important job. It became THE trophy car. We drove to the winners, Breanna gave them their trophy, and then we drove back to the pit. It was great! The people at PGARA are awesome and they are so welcoming. They’ve made both weekends really special. The Jeep also tried to help dry and warm the track, but the rain beat us. I left before they had made the official call, but I ran into my former locker neighbour (remember him?) the following day (Sunday) and he told me it was called off right after I left. Definitely a bummer, but it was so rainy.
Sunday
I ran into Jeromy, the new CKPG reporter before I left. Turns out, we were both heading to the same place: The Grandparent’s Day Celebration at Paddlewheel Park! This was a really cool event; it’s designated to celebrate all the grandparents who are raising their grandchildren. They’ve also started a really cool initiative here in town: The Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Awareness Quilt. The hopes are to get the quilt to be as big as the picnic area at Paddlewheel Park, and to get squares from all across the province. If your interested, make sure to check PG Grandparents Raising Grandchildren on Facebook.
I then headed over to the Westwood Church to see the Party in the Park. There were A LOT of people there. Unfortunately, they had to move it inside because it was raining. But, the rain did not let anyone down, because the energy in there was through the roof. I was only there for a bit, because I had to go to Pops in the “Park.”
Park is in quotations because it wasn’t in the park this year. Due to the rain, they moved it to St. Michael’s Church. The place was PACKED; I wasn’t surprised because the PGSO did an AMAZING job, performing beautiful pieces for everyone. After, I headed to Rolling Mix Concrete Arena to see the Ringette Try-It Event.
I only knew about this event because when I was at PGARA, I ran into one of my former track athletes, and she told me about it! I ran into more track athletes and got to see lots of kids try out the fastest sport on ice!
See you next weekend everyone, I gotta go catch up on university!
Sylvia, your FunChaser
