The UNBC Timberwolves are back on the pitch!
It was the home opener Friday night against the visiting Trinity Western University Spartans, and fans packed into the clubhouse, onto the filed and into their seats for the excitement of the return of Timberwolves soccer! It was a great day for soccer fans as before the UNBC season kicked off ,the Provincial Aboriginal soccer championships were taking place at the same time at the same place! Games took up most of the fields, there was merchandise, and plenty of people around to check out the matches.
As for the Timberwolves, there was fans, players and parents anxious for the first game of a double header this weekend. Music was blaring from the patio , fans had noise makers, and were prepared to lose their voices.
The T-Wolves started off strong as they found the back of the onion bag in the first half getting the fans off their feet cheering the home town boys on to the opening tally!
The game was tough, gritty, non stop, and filled with emotion. The TWU Spartans did find the tying goal later on in the half, as the first 45 minutes ended at a 1-1 draw.
The second half was just as back and forth as the first, if not more intense. With scoring opportunities for both teams, TWU took advantage making it a 2-1 lead with not much time remaining in the game. There was fouls, there was yelling, there was frustration, but most importantly, passionate soccer! There were a few GLORIOUS opportunities for UNBC, but unfortunately the goal they grabbed early on was all they could muster on this day.
Under pressure, downpouring rain, and filled with determination, the Timberwolves couldn’t keep up on the scoreboard, but showed nothing but sportsmanship at the finale of the game. These two teams face off against each other again tonight in the conclusion of the double header. One can only hope for the same intensity, but as a UNBC homer, I’ll be hoping for a different result tonight!
