Today was a big day of firsts for me and it all started off with an outdoor skate!
As I was told, the Outdoor Ice Oval behind the CN Centre is the “best kept secret in Prince George”. The oval has been in the city for quite sometime now and was supposed to play host to the speed skating events at the 2015 Winter Games, but that did not go as planned due to the poor weather conditions. But it made for a great time in the snow just a few days after Christmas!
The track is taken care of by a team of volunteers. I was informed that it took over three and a half hours to get it in the great shape that it was in for public skating today!
It was my first experience of outdoor skating and it was all that it was made up to be. The snow falling in your face, the fresh air, the scenery: it all added up to the perfect mini winter getaway.
It’s okay if you don’t have your own skates because they do have rentals. They also have a brand new housing area thanks to Canfor, so there is a cozy place to lace up the skates! If you haven’t been yet, it is a cheap activity that can include the whole family and I highly recommend it!
